The complex opened on October 30, 1898. Construction was approved in July 1898 by the Beautification Association, under chairman Franz Beydi. A memorial to Emperor Franz Joseph was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his reign. The gallery was built directly beneath a small waterfall on the path to the newly completed power plant. The plaque was designed by sculptor Carl Hermann in 1984. It bears the inscription "Emperor Franz Joseph 1848 – 1898" and features a bronze relief head of the emperor.

Loud, roaring water at the weir. A beautiful sight, complete with a captivating soundscape. Take a short break and soak in the view. It's well worth it. The weir in Scheibbs on the Erlauf River was built in 1822 and originally served to harness the river's water power for Andreas Töpper's iron and sheet metal works. It was a crucial component of the town's industrial development, making the Erlauf's natural energy technically usable. In 1959, the weir was modernized to continue providing water power for turbines and industrial purposes. Today, it stands as a testament to the historical use of river energy in Scheibbs and is a significant engineering structure in the region.

Very nice path, always along the water with several smaller waterfalls. There are many wooden bridges and also ramps and stairs. Entrance fee (I think 5€)

It's best to arrive straight away by train, as the Mariazellerbahn is one of the most beautiful railway routes in Austria. You can start the hike through the Ötschergräben at different stations and return from another. A stop at Ötscherhias is also part of it.
