Directly on the banks of the Rhine rise the picturesque ruins of the Imperial Palace of the legendary Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The palace, originally dating back to the 10th century, was expanded under Emperor Henry III and later by Emperor Barbarossa after he relocated the Rhine toll from the Netherlands to Kaiserswerth, as he needed a fortress dominating the Rhine. The location for the palace was well chosen. Because the Rhine forms a gentle curve here, it can be clearly seen over a long stretch. Even today, the castle complex consists of imposing walls up to four and a half meters thick. The idyllic castle path offers a magnificent view of the palace.

Kalkum Castle is Düsseldorf's only moated castle and an outstanding example of neoclassical palace architecture in the Rhineland. The picturesque setting serves as a venue for classical concerts. In the mid-19th century, the castle gained notoriety due to a protracted divorce dispute between its then owner. The approximately 19-hectare castle park, designed by landscape architect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe as an English landscape garden, is now a publicly accessible recreational area. One preserved relic is the former garden pavilion, which now houses a memorial to the politician Ferdinand Lassalle.

A Gesamtkunstwerk of Palace and Park When Elector Carl Theodor commissioned his "First Architect and General Director of Buildings and Gardens," Nicolas de Pigage, to build a new summer residence in 1755, this also included the redesign of the Tiergarten park located behind the old moated palace. Following the favorite idea of absolutist rulers, a "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total work of art) of palace and park was planned from the outset. "Building," "garden," and "waterworks" are to be seen as a unit, complementing each other and forming common points of reference. The interior spaces of the palace were assigned corresponding garden spaces in the park, for example, the Mirror Pond Room to the Dome Hall, the Reception Room to the Vestibule, and the private gardens (today the "English" and "French" Gardens) to the private rooms of the Elector and Electress. Just as there are several axial spatial groupings in the interior, the same applies to the garden area. Here, various gardens are located side by side on equal footing:

History Medieval Castle Originally a castle belonging to the "Lords of Benroide," about which no precise information is known, it was taken over by the Counts of Berg towards the end of the 12th century. Whether this castle was already a moated castle or whether the "Bergers" first rebuilt it is also unknown. However, the temporary presence of the counts and later dukes in a castle in Royde is documented by documents from the 13th century onward. Later, from the beginning of the 16th century onward, it was pawned several times by the dukes but always redeemed.

Originally conceived as a pleasure palace garden, the park served as a retreat for the electoral family and their guests. Later, it was also used for festive events and royal festivals. Over time, Benrath Palace Park has been lovingly restored and maintained to preserve its historical heritage. Today, it is not only a popular destination for tourists and locals, but also a vibrant cultural center that regularly hosts concerts, theater performances, and art exhibitions. Benrath Palace Park is a place of beauty, history, and relaxation, inviting visitors of all ages to enjoy its unique atmosphere and be transported back to times gone by.

Benrath Palace Park is a historic gem in the south of Düsseldorf. With its rich history and impressive architecture, the park invites visitors on a journey back in time. The park was created in the 18th century on the orders of Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz and is considered one of the finest examples of the Rococo style in Germany. Its design, created by the renowned architect Nicolas de Pigage, combines elaborate gardens, magnificent water features, and majestic avenues.
