The interior design of Neuschwanstein Castle features the recurring element of the soaring swan. This symbolizes purity and is the heraldic animal of the Counts of Schwangau, to which Ludwig II belonged. This bird can be seen everywhere, on the faucets, stained-glass windows, and even on the roof of the royal carriage.

Because of the tourist stronghold of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau sometimes gets neglected.

Breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the valley. A truly royal feeling! 😉 From the complex there is a great view of the Vilstal valley below and the peaks of the Tannheimer group.

The Zirmgrat is certainly the most beautiful route to the Falkenstein castle ruins - the highest castle in Germany at 1277 meters. King Ludwig II even wanted to build another fairytale castle on the site, which offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Allgäu Alps and the Alpine foothills. His father Maximilian I had already passed through here on his journey on what is now the "Maximiliansweg" from Lindau to Berchtesgaden. Although it is in the "shadow" of Neuschwanstein, for me it is another beautiful example of German history.

The Alpsee (approx. 62m deep) near Hohenschwangau impresses with its blue, clear water. In addition to an outdoor swimming pool and the local boat rental, the lake offers an easy alpine circular hiking trail with a length of approx. 6km! The hiking trail is “not suitable for wheelchair users, strollers or bicycles”! Listen again and again over coarse stones, large roots and small bridges with a grid floor, up and down the mountain! The view is breathtaking and you can catch a glimpse of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwanstein here and there!
