Impressive view of the Triberg waterfalls

The Triberg Waterfalls are one of the most beautiful sights in the Black Forest and Baden-Württemberg. The water streams, which run over seven cascades, are considered the highest waterfalls in Germany with a total height of 163 meters. This is why they are also a popular destination for a vacation with children. We visited the Triberg waterfalls on a summer evening. And - to our surprise - we got there without paying an entrance fee. In this article, we reveal why this was the case and what you should know about opening times, entrance fees, parking and hiking options. First of all, you should keep in mind that the Triberg waterfalls are very well known and well visited. Around 27,100 people search for them every month on Google alone (as of May 2023). Therefore, it is often full during the day. This is especially true when the weather is nice, on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Since we don't think you can really enjoy the beauty of the waterfalls in the middle of crowds, we recommend visiting outside of peak times. Before 9:00 a.m. or in the evening from around 7:00 p.m. you will find the waterfalls pleasantly empty. Another plus point for visiting in the morning or evening: you save money. The ticket booths are closed early in the morning and in the evening. This means you can get to the Triberg Waterfalls outside of the typical visiting hours without paying an entrance fee. And the parking is free too! The Edelfrauengrab waterfalls owe their name to a naturally formed scouring cave right next to one of the waterfalls, where, according to legend, an unfaithful noblewoman met her violent end. In fact, the Gottschlägel nature reserve with the waterfalls and, further up, the Karlsruher Grat is an outstanding scenic attraction in the northern Black Forest. From the hiking car park (signposted), it is only a few steps to the lowest level of the waterfalls, where the Edelfrauengrab is also located. Of course, it is worth climbing further up the adventurous paths and footbridges along the Gottschlägbach. If you want to go on an adventurous hike, climb further up at the upper end of the Gottschlägel to the Karlsruher Grat, where you can then do the via ferrata. From the Bosensteiner Eck at the upper end of the via ferrata, the path then leads over the 'Brennte Schrofen' back to Ottenhöfen. The entire route is about 12 km, elevation difference 500 m, walking time should be 4-5 hours.
