Originally built by King Christian IV (1588-1648) and once owned by the Danish naval hero Niels Juel (1629-97), Valdemars Slot is Denmark's largest private residence and the only privately owned royal palace. Located on the island of Tåsinge, the estate is one of Denmark's most scenic spots. The Brecht House in Svendborg was the home of the writer Bertolt Brecht, who lived here from 1933 to 1939 as a refugee from the German Nazi regime. Some of his most important plays, "Mother Courage and Her Children" and "Life of Galileo", were written in Danish exile. Troense harbor on the island of Taasinge is located in beautiful nature in the cozy shipping town of Troense, which is known for its pretty old half-timbered houses. From the harbor you can follow the traffic into Svendborgsund, e.g. you can watch the sound cruise M/S Helge - a comfortable transport option to go out to Svendborg or Valdemar's Castle. The castle is located on the site of the medieval castle Kærsgård. King Christian IV partially had this demolished when he had the palace built from 1639 to 1644 for his son Valdemar Christian from his second marriage to Kirsten Munk. The remains of the castle were integrated into the new building. The castle was built in the classic Renaissance style.
