Balmaha at 19 miles (30.5 km) is the first official checkpoint on the West Highland Way race. On the shore of Loch Lomond, it's accessible by road or ferry. There is a visitor centre, cafés and restaurants. Good spot to run Conic Hill if you aren't running the whole WHW. There is a statue of Tom Weir, staring across the loch. Tom was a lifelong lover of Scotland as well as a writer, broadcaster and climber.

At the base of Ben Lomond and many other walks Balmaha is a beautiful village. The rangers in the visitors centre are very helpful, for West Highland Way walkers I’d recommend popping in for a map with the restricted camping areas on it.

Great views over Loch Lomond from this iconic summit on the West Highland Way.

It is accessible for walking and forms part of the West Highland Way. During lambing season, dogs are not permitted in the two fenced fields at the eastern approach to Conic Hill, even on a lead. The season normally lasts for about three weeks in late April and early May. However, this does not affect dog access to Conic Hill from the direction of Balmaha.

Conic Hill (from the Gaelic "còinneach" meaning moss) is a prominent hill in Stirling, Scotland. It lies on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, next to the village of Balmaha, which is nowhere near Stirling. It is a sharp little summit that lies on the Highland Boundary Fault. Broadcaster, writer and climber Mr Weir died in 2006 aged 91. As well as presenting Weir's Way between 1976 and 1987, he wrote a monthly feature in the Scots Magazine for about 50 years. This bronze statue is a fitting memorial to him and not far from where he lived in Gartocharn.

Lovely view, but not very rideable on a gravel bike with bags. A mountainbike might be more suited.

A great foretaste of the coming days WHW. Def. the highlight of the first stage. In October it was well attended at sunset, but not uncomfortably overcrowded.

Now (2023) very elaborately paved with natural stones. Not very conducive to weak knees after a long day of hiking. Looks great, it was definitely a lot of work, but natural ground is simply more pleasant.

Very elaborately maintained section of path. The stones certainly make it easier to walk on wet days and protect the section from erosion. However, we didn't find it very pleasant to walk downhill. You have to be careful where you put your foot.

When the weather is good, the first absolute highlight of the WHW in a northerly direction. The sun reflects on Loch Lomond and warms the mind.

Bealach Ard is the gap in the ridge between Conic Hill and the subsidiary Tom nan Oisgin. For those ascending to Conic Hill from Balmaha, emerging from the trees here is a glorious moment, revealing a stunning Highland vista. Views across Loch Lomond's islands and over to the Arrochar Alps are sure to stir the soul.

Nice viewpoint in less than 1:30 on a well prepared path/stairway

Relatively straightforward route up to top of Conic Hill. Can be busy, as it's on the West Highland Way.

There is a small park by the lake near the monument.
