Sandy Smith Nature Reserve is a 93-hectare site on the floodplain of the River Flit in Bedfordshire, UK, managed by The Greensand Trust. It was gifted by Peter Smith and named after his wife, Sandy. The reserve features a mix of wet grassland, ponds, and wet woodland, providing a haven for diverse wildlife. You can spot birds like reed buntings, see dragonflies, and find various wildflowers. The reserve also includes former arable land being restored to grassland to support farmland birds. While a great spot for walks, part of the reserve is a live army shooting range, so visitors must stick to the marked footpaths for safety.

As a cyclist, this route offers a fantastic alternative to the busy A507, linking up with the A507 Cycle Path. It's an excellent east-to-west connector via quieter country roads. It's unsurfaced but passable on most bikes.

Lovely food, lovely countryside location, popular, but £3-4 more than similar farm cafes.

Southill Tea Rooms is a charming village tea room offering delicious cakes and light bites, including a bacon roll.

Great pit stop for coffee break. Outside seating. Lovely staff, brought coffee out so I could stay with bike as I was on a solo ride.
