Bremerhaven's first artificial harbor basin was built between 1827 and 1830. Dutch contractors were commissioned to carry out the work because they were expected to have the necessary technical and organizational knowledge of hydraulic engineering. The construction was supervised by the hydraulic engineer Jacobus Johannes van Ronzelen, also from Holland. He had prepared the report for the facility a year earlier and was appointed Bremen's harbor construction director and building officer in 1827. The harbor was 750 meters long, 57.5 meters wide and 5.25 meters deep and had a lock with an outer harbor on the Geeste. The harbor basins had to be dug out by hand and the excavated material had to be carried away in simple carts. Up to 900 workers from near and far did the hard work for meager wages and poor working conditions. The foundation stone for the lock was laid on 12 July 1828. Just two years later, on 1 September 1830, the port was completed.
