🚢 The Oldenburg Lock is a key transportation hub for shipping in the region and is located directly next to the Upper Hunte hydroelectric power plant. The lock is situated in an area of great importance for water management, as it also contains the weir for regulating the water level and the aforementioned hydroelectric power plant for energy generation.

🚴‍♀️The route is considered easy to moderately difficult and, due to its mostly flat terrain, is very well suited for families and leisure cyclists. You'll cycle through the wide, flat Wesermarsch region, the bike-friendly city of Oldenburg, and the rolling hills, forests, and heathlands of the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park.

🚴‍♀️ 🚴‍♀️ Along the Hunte River, there is a very popular and well-signposted long-distance cycle route, the Hunte Cycle Path. This cycle path offers a varied route through diverse natural landscapes in Lower Saxony.

🏞️ Highlights of the Route The circular route takes you through a diverse landscape and past several interesting sites. Lake Tilly: You'll walk around the lake, named after the imperial general Count Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly from the Thirty Years' War. Hunte River: Part of the route runs along the Hunte dike, offering a view of the river from an elevated position. You'll also cross the Hunte River via the Hunte Bridge at Lake Tilly. Iburg and Tilly Hill: The path leads past the historic Iburg, a fortified settlement, and Tilly Hill. The hill offers a beautiful view and also bears the name of the famous general.

🌳 The Tillysee circular trail is a popular, short hiking and cycling route in the heart of the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park, connecting the lake, the Hunte River, and historical sites. Length: approx. 6.9 to 7.3 kilometers (depending on the starting point)

🌉 The Hunte Bridge at Tillysee is an attractive spot along the Hunte River, often associated with the Hunte Cycle Path and the nearby Iburg. The bridge serves as an important crossing over the Hunte and is located in a scenic area that belongs to the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park.

🌊 Special features: At Tungeln, the river's course is regulated by the Tungeln weir. Historically, this is the point where the Hunte River was divided to protect the city of Oldenburg from flooding and to allow shipping.
