Between Leira and Fagernes there are two alternatives - the old road on the upside of the E16 and the pedestrian and cycling path "Valdresbanevegen" along the lakeshore. We recommend the latter. It is called Valdresbanevegen after the old rail road. The tracks have been removed, the path has been sealed and is now a popular walking and cycling path.

The whole area is fantastic. Minimally developed to be a cabin field and it bears a strong stamp of old style and seat culture. Really recommended. Pack a lunch and enjoy the day(s)

You should have slightly rougher tires on this part of the route. It is not impossible, but it requires the cyclist to stay on the bike. Just take it easy, enjoy the mountains and enjoy your trip.

The rune stone is one of the oldest known stones, the inscription was dated to the 4th century. The first 4 characters of the inscription are missing but the text probably reads: I Godegast painted a rune
