The Michaux State Forest was bought from the old timber and iron mining companies after they had clear-cut and destroyed the old growth. Conservationists realized that without good forest management the forest wouldn't re-grow, so the land was purchased and the Michaux State Forest was created.

Caledonia State Park is a great place for a break after a long ride. It is a beautiful, wooded park that has many hiking and biking paths. There are also picnic areas and restrooms. The Appalachian Trail passes through the park, so there is a good chance you will see hikers out enjoying the trail.

The Big Mountain Overlook is an official overlook just off the side of the Tuscarora Trail near Hogback Mountain. The summit of Big Mountain rises up to 2,458 feet and offers panoramic views from the vantage point.
