The basilica is located on Pjazza San Ġorġ and is known for its magnificent interior, which has earned it the nicknames "Golden Church" or "Marble Basilica." The church was originally built between 1672 and 1678, but was damaged by an earthquake in 1693 and reconsecrated in 1755. The basilica is dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of the island of Gozo. Inside are works of art by famous painters such as Mattia Preti.

The parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Mgarr was built in stages over an earlier 15th century church, and was completed with the construction of the large dome.
