You can enjoy delicious food at Grachthaus, Kruittorenstraat 1 in Bredevoort. From here you have a beautiful view of the Great Canal and Vestingpark. In summer, you can sit outside on the terrace and soak up the sun.

The large moat is a former defensive ditch in the northwest of the town of Bredevoort. Its shape still clearly reveals the course of the former ramparts and the Treurniet and Vreesniet bastions. Today, the Vestingpark is a picturesque park with paths, a bridge, old trees, a teahouse, a grotto, and a tree trail. In 1784, the former administrator, Bernard Andreas Roelvink, leased the remains of two bastions (Vreesniet and Treurniet) and the land between them (the present-day fortress park and orchard). Around 1850, he had an English garden laid out there, bordered to the northwest by the large moat.

RESTAURANT BERTRAM: Located at Het Zand 1 in 7126 BE Bredevoort, the restaurant is centrally located on the market square in Bredevoort, in the heart of the Achterhoek region. The Bertram Inn is a special place: re-established in 1994 on a former town farm dating back to 1704, it offers a romantic atmosphere reminiscent of medieval times. In addition to a seasonal lunch menu, the Bertram also serves coffee and homemade cakes and bread. Guests can also enjoy the lovely outdoor terrace. I highly recommend the delicious, homemade apple pie with fresh whipped cream. The Hotel Bertram is situated on a former town farm dating back to 1680 in the heart of Bredevoort. The hotel grounds are separate from the restaurant, just around the corner, about a 50-meter walk away. A small, cozy outdoor seating area is available exclusively for hotel guests. In 1995-1996, the ruins of the former Hemmink estate were cleared and partially rebuilt for use as a picnic area. This has resulted in a beautiful, creative space with tables, benches, and a shelter. There is plenty of room for children to run around and play. The former Hemmink estate was first documented in 1331. It mentions that Johannes, called Hemming, leased the property from the monastery in Vreden. The nearby Krosenbrink estate was also said to have been owned by the monastery. The two estates were closely linked. For example, in 1724, a Jan Krosenbrink was born in Hemmink. He later adopted the name Hemmink, thus Jan Hemmink. This was common in the eastern part of the country. People often named themselves after the farm where they lived. Or, conversely, the farm was named after the resident. All this doesn't make genealogical research any easier. In the mid-19th century, the Esselink family lived in Hemmink. It was a large farm, which acquired its current form in 1903. Due to an inheritance dispute, the farm fell into disrepair. In the 1950s, owner Arend Jan Esselink and his wife died in a car accident. The heirs were unable to agree on inheritance rights for a long time. Eventually, the Hemmink estate passed to a relative in Hilversum, who ignored his property. In the 1980s, the farm was inhabited by squatters, among others, and fell into complete disrepair. In 1995-1996, the Agricultural Land Development and Management Service cleared the estate. Most of the ruins were rebuilt. Some remains of the walls remained standing, and a picnic area was created. (The somewhat sad end of an old farm boy.)
