The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest national scenic trail in the United States. It starts in Vermont and ends in North Dakota, passing through six other northern states along the way. As thru-hikers move from East to West, they would end their hike along the trail here in Lake Sakakawea State Park after hiking over 4,800 miles.

The Shoreline Trail traverses the entire north/south length of Lake Sakakawea State Park along the shore of Lake Sakakawea. On this unpaved trail, hikers can see a variety of igneous rock formations and have the chance of spotting a variety of different species of waterfowl and shorebirds.

The Missouri River is the longest river in the United States at 2,341 miles. It forms the world's fourth-longest river system when combined with the lower Mississippi River. This river was integral in the expansion of the United States of America throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Cross Ranch State Park offers one first-come, first-served hike-in campsite. The hike-in campsite is close to a vault toilet but does not have potable water accessible.

Two Rivers Trail is an almost 6-mile loop that allows for views of both the Knife River and the Missouri River at different sections of the trail. At the southernmost tip of the trail, hikers can see where the Knife River joins the Missouri River.

The large circles that can be seen in the grass in this area are remnants of the foundations of houses from a Hidatsa earthlodge village. There is an informational sign about the area's past and guided tours are offered by the U.S. National Parks Service.

Lake Sakakawea is a reservoir that was impounded by Garrison Dam in 1953. This lake is named after the Shoshone-Hidatsa woman, Sakakawea, that accompanied Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on what is known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition. This is the largest man-made lake in North Dakota.

Fort Stevenson State Park has miles of trails, rentable facilities, playgrounds, and an interpretive center, among other things. The park is on the shore of Lake Sakakawea and offers a variety of water recreation options. The park is named after a military supply depot from the late 1800s and has a park museum that offers information on the history of the park as well as the flora and fauna found in the park today.
