Nice leisurely walk through the old Abbey ruins destroyed by Henry viii

The footbridge crossing the River Soar weir is on the "Purple route" around Watermead Country Park, a beautiful loop of hard surfaced path, with a network of lakes on one side and the Grand Union Canal on the other.

The River Soar divides this beautiful park into two distinct areas: On the western side are the Abbey Grounds with remains of the twelfth century Leicester Abbey, and the ruins of Cavendish House, a seventeenth century mansion. Abbey Park Café is also here. To the east of the river is the Victorian part of the park with its evergreen shrubberies, trees, boating lake, miniature railway, and formally planted flower displays.

Turn off the canal path onto Aylestone Meadows to access

very good straight cycleway into Leicester

Not sure how often he stops by but lovely coffee and friendly place for a chat with lovely views. benches nearby for a suit down and take in the scenery.
