Schoodic Loop Road has a couple good outcrops where hikers and drivers can get a great view of Buck Cove. The views from here are great, and wildlife viewers have great opportunities to see ocean animals and birds, but for a higher view, hikers should seek out Buck Cove Mountain just nearby for an elevated view of the area.

There is a decent sized parking lot here leading to a network of trails exploring the ponds and bogs around Tunk Mountain. The trails to the west side of the mountain can be harder to find and boggy when the water table is high, but the main trails are excellent.

Tunk Mountain is at an elevation of 1160 feet and can be accessed by hiking trails in a mixed forest and a wet forest with scenic bog bridges. After you cross a small, clear stream coming from Spring River Lake, the trail becomes rockier with accents and descents before the summit of Tunk Mountain. The large boulders in this area were deposited by former glaciers many years ago.

Lead Mountain has a summit of 1,479 feet above seal level, making it one of the higher peaks eastern Maine. Lead Mountain on private land, but the public are welcome to run and hike via Bear Pond Road, and are only permitted to stay on the road. Lead Mountain got its name by mistake; the bedrock on this mountain has small pieces of pyrrhotite, which was mistaken for lead. From the summit, on a clear day, you can see south all the way to Acadia National Park and the ocean harbors around the area.

Bear Pond is just off of Pear Pond Road, on private land but open to the public. Bear Pond's intake of water comes from Bear Brook, where water drains from the slopes of Lead Mountain and the Bear Brook Watershed. Bear Pond drains into the Little Narraguagus River on its west side.

The Blueberry Hill lot at the southern tip of the Schoodic Loop Road provides immediate access to a pebble beach with views across to Little Moose Island. This is also a great place to start the Anvil Trail or Alder Trail to Schoodic Head, though parking can fill up quickly in the summer. If the lot is full, you can often find street parking further up the road.

The Anvil Trail clambers up roots, rocks, and steps to the summit of Schoodic Head 515 feet above sea level. The terrain is similar to many of the trails on the main island. You are treated to views that look out upon Mount Desert Island and the open Atlantic.

Schoodic Head offers sweeping panoramic views toward the mainland. Schoodic Peninsula was nearly developed into a summer resort town — not dissimilar to Bar Harbor — by Wall Street tycoon John Moore in the 1890s. Later, after his death, the land was instead incorporated into Acadia National Park.
