The old sawmill. Nice to see.

The centuries-old sawmill 'De Rat' is located on the Frisian Geeuw River between the towns of IJlst and Sneek. This mill was built in 1683 but is still in operation today. 'De Rat' means "the rat" in English and specializes in sawing pine, larch, and elm.

Theater Sneek was founded in 2008 in the former post office on Westersingel and is part of the Sneek cultural district. Construction of the new theater began in July 2010 on the site of the former post office. The post office was demolished for this purpose. The theater performances were relocated to the Noorderkerk church on the other side of the canal. The design of the new building was by the architectural firm Alberts en Van Huut.

The statue refers to Fortuna, the goddess of fortune and patron saint of cities, families, and nations. The overflowing horn symbolizes the material prosperity of the fortunate person who encounters it. But the golden sphere constantly rotates on its axis, so that the water, like the influx of fortune, becomes an unpredictable force. The abundance that happens to be showered upon us can be taken away just as quickly by fate. Just look at the history of Sneek.

It is worthwhile to step of your bike and watch the "brugwachter" do his job. They collect the fee with a "klomp" wooden shoe on a fishing rod :D

This small octagonal mill, originally built in 1899, was decommissioned in 1951. After a period of decay, it was temporarily saved in 1957 by carpenter F. de Groot from Ferwoude. After this, several smaller and larger repairs were necessary. It is remarkable that, when the mill was decommissioned, at a certain point the screw and screw box had disappeared and the watercourses were filled with soil! The mill had, as it were, been secretly made completely unsuitable for pumping water. A very large restoration took place at the beginning of the 21st century. After the restoration of 2002, the mill was transferred to the Molenstichting Nijefurd. The Wetterskip Fryslân has designated this mill as a reserve pumping station in the event of serious flooding.
