The lake lies at 419 m above sea level and has a surface area of 24 km². Its greatest depth is 151 m. Due to its unique location (in the middle of a valley with steep slopes up to 1,000 m high on both sides), the water temperature of Lake Walensee is several degrees cooler than that of neighboring lakes. In Romansh, the lake is called Lag/Lac Rivaun. Accordingly, it was first documented in 843 as lacu riuano. The German name means "Lake of the Welsch" (cf. Walchensee in Bavaria), because in the early Middle Ages, Lake Walen formed the language border between the Alemanni, who settled in the west, and the Romansh, the Welsch, in the east.
