A very fine mountain that is the high point of the Carneddau range. These mountains are high, remote and so much quieter than the Glyderau or Snowdon. Fabulous walking country.

Carnedd Llewelyn is high and relatively remote, so walks there are quite a serious undertaking.

As the previous person said, it is very very wet on the outward path from the bothy. If you do decide to go anyways, make sure to have a walking stick or similar to stabilise you and determine the depth of the water before sticking your foot in it.

Magnificent and dizzying view! However, prefer to go around in the opposite direction to that indicated. The steep slope is very narrow and steep. Easier to go up than to go down.

The return leg on this walk is often very boggy...In wet weather I recommend returning on the outward route....

I was shocked of how much of quieter beautiful mountain range that Wales’s second highest mountain actually is. The mountain is located in a vast wild area called The Carneddau. This is basically a largely untouched collection of mountains and valleys found in the north eastern part of the park. The Carnedd Llewelyn has a summit height of 1064m making Carnedd Llewelyn Wales’s Second Highest Mountain.

We did this Route clockwise I would suggest to try it anticlockwise

The Carneddau are a group of mountains in Snowdonia, Wales. They include the largest contiguous areas of high ground in Wales and England, as well as six or seven of the highest peaks in the country—the Fifteen Peaks!!

At 3,490 feet (1,064 m) this is the highest point in the Carneddau range and the second-highest prominent peak in Wales. It's a vast, rocky plateau at the top of a steep climb but great running once you get there. It's also part of the Welsh 3000s challenge route.

Pen yr Helgi Du is a fine summit to the southeast of Carnedd Llewelyn. It stands high above wild Cwm Eigiau and the beautiful Ffynnon Llugwy reservoir. Its summit is linked to Carnedd Llewelyn via the narrow ridge at Bwlch Eryi Farchog. The traverses takes you above the mighty cliffs of Craig yr Ysfa, which are popular with rock climbers.

Ffynnon Llugwy lies at a height of about 1,786 feet (544 m) and covers an area of some 40 acres and has a maximum depth of 146 ft (45 m). Since the early twentieth century water has been taken from its outflow, Afon Llugwy to feed Llyn Cowlyd via a series of leats. Since the mid 1970s the lake has additionally acted as a reservoir for Bangor and eastern Anglesey, which necessitated the laying of an 11-mile pipeline to the water treatment works at Mynydd Llandegai. Afon Llugwy which flows via Capel Curig and Betws-y-coed before becoming a tributary of the River Conwy.

Carnedd Llewelyn is the second highest peak in Wales. It is also very rugged, as is the whole Carneddau range which was shaped by the last Ice Age. Legend has it that the two small lakes nestling below the towering cliffs to the east of Carnedd Llywelyn were haunted and that deformed fish with heads but no bodies lurked in their depths. If you are lucky you may see the Welsh Poppy which can withstand the elements.
