ブルフォードキウイは、イングランド、ウィルトシャー州、ソールズベリー平原の軍事都市ブルフォードの上にあるビーコンヒルに、チョークで刻まれたキウイの大きな姿です。これは、第一次世界大戦の終結後の送還を待っていたニュージーランド派遣軍の兵士たちによって1919年に作成されました。 これは、ウィルトシャー州にある数少ない丘の図形のうち、白馬でも軍のバッジでもないものです。

Larkhill Camp – Eerie Order on the Edge of the Plain Larkhill Camp feels like riding through a live blueprint of military precision. This historic garrison town, perched on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain, isn’t your typical village stop — it’s a place where wide tarmac roads stretch between regimented rows of near-identical housing blocks, all arranged with deliberate symmetry. Founded in the late 19th century as an artillery training base, Larkhill is still an active military camp, home to the Royal Artillery. You’ll feel that presence in the design — everything is clean, uniform, and spaced out. There’s a peculiar quiet, even when the camp is busy, and it lends a kind of surreal calm to your ride through. While not a classic beauty spot, it’s fascinating in its own right — a moment of stark contrast between the ancient wildness of the Plain and the tightly ordered world of the MOD. It’s not uncommon to hear distant explosions or spot helicopters overhead. And just beyond, the landscape opens up again into chalk trails and flint-edged bridleways. 🚴‍♂️ Bikepacker Tip: Water and supplies are limited here — the camp isn’t set up for tourists — so fill up in nearby Durrington or Amesbury if you’re heading across the Plain. Standing on top of Bulford Down, you can look north over miles of military firing ranges. You might see tanks lumbering about in the distance or perhaps the landscape will be shrouded in quiet. The Bulford chalk kiwi carving lies just west of here.

This charming and little-known chalk hill carving was crafted by New Zealand soldiers in 1919, whilst waiting for transport to take them home after the First World War. For months they were trapped in Bulford Camp, which lies just below the kiwi's hill, as transport ships were unavailable. To alleviate the increasing unrest in the camp, the men's commanding officers set them about carving a giant kiwi into the chalk hillside, leaving their mark. The kiwi covers 1.5 acres (6,100 m sq) and is hard to see, as the military camp takes up much of the land below the hill. There is a good viewing point from the Bulford Droveway whilst you'll find an information board here, at the top of the kiwi's head.

Milston has two footbridges over the River Avon and this is a particularly picturesque place from which to admire the river as it flows south to Salisbury. The water here is serene, the riverbanks quiet and the trees hang gently over the reflective surface. This footbridge allows you to reach Milston from Durrington and vice versa. Both the Orange Way and the Great Stones Way footpaths pass by.

Ablington is a gorgeous hamlet on the banks of the River Avon a little north of Amesbury and Salisbury. It's particularly notable for its phenomenal thatched, timbered cottages which make it rather look as though it's wandered out of an old folk tale. Some date back to the 17th century and have been lovingly taken care of.
