The views from Old Sarum are highly praised and are one of the main reasons visitors come to the site. Because the castle is situated on a commanding hilltop, it offers sweeping and far-reaching views across the Wiltshire countryside. Wiltshire Countryside: You get unrivalled, expansive views over the surrounding Wiltshire plains and farmland. The ancient earthworks of the hillfort provide a perfect vantage point to take in the landscape. Modern Salisbury: From the inner castle ramparts, you can clearly see the city of Salisbury (sometimes called "New Sarum"), including the tall spire of Salisbury Cathedral in the distance. This visual link connects the historic, lost city on the hill with the modern city that grew from it. The Plains and Sky: The high, open position of Old Sarum makes it a great spot for enjoying the sky and weather, with many visitors noting the dramatic atmosphere or simply the pleasure of the open air. We had to cut off part of the route as it was too bogey.

We stayed here for the Enve Stone Circle Ride and it was absolutely beautiful!

The picturesque Woodford Valley, where the River Avon lazily meanders towards Salisbury, is home to three attractive villages: Upper, Middle and Lower Woodford. Running the quiet country lanes is a delight, as is picking up the many trails that explore the region. A trio of named long-distance trails pass through: the Sarsen Way, the Old Sarum Way and the Monarch's Way.

Great Wishford sits in a meander of the River Wylye, beneath the chalk ridge adorned by the beautiful Grovely Wood. From the village, Grovely Road leads up to the woodland trails and is a good option for those looking to tackle some hill reps. According to an ancient custom, the residents of the village are permitted to gather firewood annually from Grovely Wood on Oak Apple Day, which is the 29th of May. The village pub, the Royal Oak, is a good shout for post run refreshment.

Grovely Wood is one of Wiltshire's largest mixed woodlands and there's loads of trail running potential here. Particularly beautiful in spring, the chalk ridge it woodland adorns is a delight all year round. This section is part of the Monarch's Way, a 625-mile (1,006 km) long-distance trail that represents the escape route taken by King Charles II after his defeat at the battle of Worcester.

First Broad Drive is an arrow-straight avenue through the heart of Grovely Woods. It's easy to pick up speed along this section; usually straight lines are something of a rarity where trail running is concerned. Unsurprisingly, given its trajectory, it was once part of a Roman road, a section of a trade route that connected the Mendips to the English Channel.

This is a gorgeous section of the Old Sarum Way long-distance trail. The views really open up and, if you're lucky, you might spot deer. The Old Sarum Way is a 32-mile (51 km) long-distance loop around the historic city of Salisbury.

The Devenish is a reserve managed by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. It's a lovely area of young woodland, mature beech woodland, chalk downland and meadow. Early summer is when the reserve is at its most vibrant, as the wildflowers are at their best. A run to the top of the steep downland slope provides glorious views of the Woodford Valley.

Good trip for hiking or cycling with some interesting history. Not to far from Stonehenge

One of the largest mixed woodlands in southern Wiltshire, situated on a chalk ridge above the River Wylye. It is recognised for its nature conservation importance through designation as a County Wildlife Site. Among the species found here is the Purple Emperor butterfly.

There is a river trail that leads to Salisbury from the Old Sarum. Great views of the surrounding countryside from Old Sarum. To the east is Old Sarum Airfield which has cafe which is nice for a stop for tea/cake and cake,serves hot food too.

There's a small cafe just inside the main gate - you can bring your bike in and prop it up on the slope opposite the cafe and purchase some refreshments (without paying the full entry price). There are toilets in the car park too, which might be useful!
