Long before the Iron Age hillfort, Maiden Castle (often referred to as Maiden Hill) hosted two significant Neolithic monuments dating to 3500 BC. These include a causewayed enclosure—a ritual gathering place with concentric ditches—and a massive bank barrow stretching 546 meters. These earthworks represent some of Britain’s earliest monumental architecture, marking the site as a sacred landscape for millennia.

What a wonderful place: time seems to have stood still here. While some of the furniture has been reconstructed, it's fortunate that Hardy's house has been so completely preserved: a fascinating journey into the Victorian England of one of the world's leading authors... the room where he wrote many of his poems and novels, an enchanting garden, and even the somewhat quirky "Pet Sematary," where several dogs and cats were buried. So much of the atmosphere is still preserved here: a must-see, ideally with a guided tour: it's worth it.

Most of the church dates back to the 15th century, with later alterations and extensions in subsequent centuries. The church has been a listed building since 1950.

You could of choose to continue up along the grove, alongside the Roman Defensive Ditch and Bank system but you'd be with the traffic so taking a right here and going through the Industrial Estate avoids all the traffic and brings you up onto the road that takes you to Poundbury

Cosy Pub, food only so-so. You could if you wished veer off to the left after the pub and take instead the shared cycle/pedestrican route and continue all the way to Hangmans Cottage

Well worth a visit. Grounds small but if the weather is good nice to relax outside after looking around the house. Thomas Hardy designed and had built Max Gate after he had made it as a writer and poet, living there from 1885 until his death in 1928. Now a National Trust property. No longer offers refreshments so bring your own.

Carries London Road over the River Frome towhich stood a few hundred feet to the north. Two metal plaques threaten transportation for life for anyone found guilty of wilfully damaging the bridge. Featured in Far From the Madding Crowd (1874) and The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) by Thomas Hardy. The bridge marks the boundary between town and country. Then, as now, Casterbridge “… had no suburbs—in the ordinary sense. Country and town met at a mathematical line.” Beyond lie the water meadows and corn fields Hardy calls Durnover Moor. A small path through the meadows to the north side of Grey’s Bridge leads up river 50 yards or so to the pool called Ten Hatches Weir. Here, Michael Henchard intended to drown himself, after finding his own effigy floating in the water.
