I always make time to pop in on my walks in this area as it is wonderfully calming and peaceful. I like to just sit and marvel at the talent of the architecture.

For many, known as the ‘Cathedral of Dorset’ Founded by St. Aldhelm in AD 705, Sherborne Abbey has developed from a Saxon cathedral to one of England’s most beautiful parish churches. The abbey is a Grade I listed building. It has several distinct architectural styles throughout and well worth a visit.

The gardens were opened as a public garden on 5 September 1906. There is a band stand in the middle of the gardens which is still used for concerts in the summer. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in the gardens.

Sherborne School is a public school (English independent boarding school for boys) located beside Sherborne Abbey. The school has been in continuous operation on the same site for over 1,300 years. It was founded in 705 AD by St Aldhelm and, following the dissolution of the monasteries, re-founded in 1550 by King Edward VI, making it one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom.

Sherborne Abbey, is a Church of England church in Sherborne, Dorset. It has been a Saxon cathedral (705–1075), a Benedictine abbey church (998–1539), and since 1539, a parish church.

Lovely small park in Sherborne that is peaceful, beautiful and maintained. Ideal for a picnic or just a cuppa stop. You can get a nice coffee at Olivers on Cheap St. Waitrose nearby. Lots of places to eat in the town - Olivers, The Three Wishes and The Sherborne (immediately opposite) are our favourites at this point in time - plenty of choices though :-). The Sherborne is well worth a visit in it's own right. Updated 14/08/25.

This extraordinary church displays numerous styles of architecture, thanks to its exceptionally long history. Founded in 705 AD, the building has Saxon and Norman heritage but much of what you see today is the result of an extensive rebuild during the 15th century. Today the 'abbey' is a church, but it was once a cathedral and then an abbey.
