The location of a manor house ever since the 11th century, Ashton Court and its extensive estate is a grand setting to the west of Bristol. Owned by the Smyth family between the 16th and 20th centuries, today the mansion and its stables are Grade I-listed. The surrounding estate includes a deer park, woodland, MTB trails and golfing facilities and is an absolute delight to explore, rewarding with fine views across Bristol. After a run in the parkland, the Courtyard Cafe is a tempting option.

Popular with walkers, cyclists and runners, the Pill Path follows the Avon from the city out to the village of Pill, near where the river empties into the Severn Estuary. The running is great fun on a gently undulating trail. There are superb views of Clifton Suspension Bridge and the cliffs of the Avon Gorge.

This is a super fun downhill section that takes you from the North Road entrance to Leigh Woods down to the Pill Path. The descent is gradual to begin with and becomes increasingly steep beyond a set of steps. The way the path weaves and undulates makes it a pleasure to run. Of course, it also makes for a great challenge when running back up.

Nice rugged coastal walk.

The small cove at Layde Bay is one of the prettiest beaches along the Somerset coast. A small stretch of sand between the rocks and backing onto the densely vegetated cliffs. This is a pleasant beach to soak up the sun but swimming is not generally advised as with many of the beaches along the Bristol Channel coast. There can be strong currents as the tide moves and the sand towards the low water mark is decidedly muddy. That said Ladye Bay is home to the annual “Long Swim” which covers about a mile down to Clevedon Pier. Layde Bay is also a popular climbing spot with a variety of climbs. Abbotts Pool is a lovely little lake surrounded by woodland. You reach the lake via a network of lanes and bridleways. It lies on the NCN Route 334. The pools were closed in 2020 due to littering and anti-social behaviour. Makes sure you leave no trace so that humans can enjoy the beautiful spot alongside its wildlife.

Makes a great stop point on a run or walk through the woods. Don't leave your rubbish!

Abbots Pool is a tranquil pond nestled within an idyllic mature woodland. The pond was originally part of a series of pools developed by medieval monks to farm fish. Due to some antisocial behaviour at the pond, activities such as swimming and barbecues have been banned. However, there are still lots of beautiful trails to explore in this nature reserve, which is home to much wildlife including deer, bats and birds.

Jim Dyer was the creator of the Gordano Round, a 43 mile walk that stretches from Portishead down to Clevedon, then through the woods to Clapton in Gordano, over to Abbots Leigh then back to Portishead. It is a well loved route with a huge variety of scenery, stretching from a coastal path, through woodlands, over fields and across vistas, whilst also being well maintained and marked. The tribute sites on the coastal part of the route, with a view out over the Severn.

Looks out over Walton in Gordano with the Severn peaking through a dip in the hills of Clevedon. Can be reached through Norton's Wood to the west, a great spot for a picnic

A short section across fields into woodland. After a steep uphill to the east you get picturesque views over Somerset towards the docks, before descending down to meet Failand Lane. Marks part of the Gordano Round's northern section.
