Beautiful Dartmoor roads up to Hound Tor. If coming from Trendlebere, the climbing gets much easier from here.

This tor is just a stone's throw from the nearby car park and towers over Dartmoor. Very impressive, good for a short tour, as a starting point for visiting other tors, for a picnic (depending on the unpredictable weather here 😉) or recently also for climbing (you could see a few people free climbing - but I can't say for sure whether it's allowed) and for treasure hunts. Otherwise just beautiful nature and (outside of tourist times) nice and quiet.

Fun bridleway on an MTB or CX/gravel bike! Watch out for the rocky section with a couple of mini drops and larger rocks towards the east of the segment.

Hamel Down is the large area of moorland running from Grimspound in the north to Wind Tor in the south. It's a long, wide ridge with many paths and trails winding across it. The best running follows the main ridge path downhill from Hameldown Tor to Wind Tor. The trails are mostly close-cropped grass, sprinkled with granite boulders. The running is excellent!

Kitty Jay is said to have been a servant girl at one of the nearby farms. Her lover betrayed her, distancing himself from her when they found out that she was pregnant, rather than taking responsibility and marrying Kitty. In despair, she hanged herself in a barn. In those bygone days suicide victims weren't buried in the churchyard, instead they were buried at the edge of the parish. So here lies Kitty Jay, and you'll notice that there are normally fresh flowers and often gifts left on her grave. No one knows who replaces the flowers so regularly.

At the northern end of Hamel Down, where the moor drops down to Natsworthy, is a memorial to a RAF bomber that crashed after a raid in March 1941 during the Second World War. The memorial is by the side of a path that cuts across the moors to/from English Heritage's ancient settlement Grimspound. The memorial reads: R.A.F S.49. R.D.W. C.J.L. R.B. R.L.A.E. 21.3.41. ON 22ND MARCH 1941 A ROYAL AIR FORCE BOMBER 49 SQDN SCAMPTON CRASHED RETURNING FROM OPERATIONS OVER FRANCE THE 4 CREW WERE LOST THIS MEMORIAL BEARS THEIR INITIALS AND SQUADRON NUMBER – COMMEMORATING THEIR SELFLESS COURAGE AND THAT OF FELLOW AIRMEN WHO PERISHED ON DARTMOOR 1939 – 1945 THEIR SACRIFICE HELPED US TO MAINTAIN FREEDOM. THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION 1991.

Hound Tor is a mass of granite boulders supposedly resembling two huge hounds. It's fun to scramble here and the running is ace, the springy grass is great fun and the rocks are grippy even when wet. There is normally an ice cream van in the car park.

Beautiful granite formation. With a little imagination you can see many characters here... maybe even the Hound of Baskerville.
