The remnants of a much bigger forest, high on a hill. Very atmospheric place.

You do get a view of the distant Welsh Hills from the summit, but you need to stand on the bench to get a good view as the trees are starting to grow and block it out.

This is the start point of the Glyndŵr's Way National Trail which winds through mid-Wales and ends at Welshpool. It's not as popular a trail as Offa's Dyke which is the main reason you'll meet other hikers here in Knighton.

It is also notable as the starting point of Glyndwr's Way, following the route of the Welsh leader's significant battles. It is also a mecca for border cyclists and there are plenty of routes to navigate the surrounding hills and stunning countryside.

Although originally made up of ancient royal chases and deer parks, the forest we see today was largely planted by the Forestry Commission in the 1920s. It was named after the Mortimer Family, Norman Lords who held power over the region for some 300 years.

could spend hours here. worthy of a day to itself. this red run is very steep, with slippy roots. incredibly tech.

Hopton Castle refers to a village and a castle of the same name, hidden in the rolling Shropshire countryside between Craven Arms and Knighton. The castle itself has been a ruin since the 18th century, and is a wonderfully atmospheric place to wander around. Grade I listed, it's looked after by the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust, which has overseen recent restoration work and an appearance on Time Team in 2010.

High Vinnalls is the highest point in Mortimer Forest at 1,230 feet (375 m) and is considered part of the Shropshire Hills family, despite being in North Herefordshire. It rewards hikers with a massive vista of wild Mid Wales to the west, as well as a tick for Marilyn baggers. The Mortimer Trail, a 30-mile (48 km) hike from Ludlow to Kington, passes over the summit.

Straddling the border between Herefordshire and Shropshire is Mortimer Forest. It's an invigorating place to walk, with enchanting, hilly trails and plenty of wildlife. The forest reaches its highest point on the Marilyn summit of High Vinnalls at 1,230 feet (375 m). Once an ancient hunting forest, the majority of the trees here today were planted in the 1920s by the Forestry Commission. There are various circular trails through the forest representing varying degrees of difficulty.

Always quite. Even on a busy day (more than 10 cars in the car park) you don't seem to see anyone. Natural trails that present different challenges depending on the seasons. Some lung busting climbs and some great flowing (very fast when dry) singletracks, rooty and rutty sections (slippy when wet) and lots of 'off Piste' areas to explore. No trail centre so no wash area. Dirty rider and bike guaranteed during Winter and Spring.

Experience from summer 2019: I wouldn't call the town a highlight anymore, vlt. once it was. In the meantime, it looks partly run down, many shops are closed and restaurants are scarce. It is simply because of the hiking trail Offa's Dike and you therefore have to get through here. I cannot recommend more than a stop-over-night here.

Knighton is a market town with winding streets and half-timbered houses. There is evidence of human settlement at Knighton since the Stone Age, but the town you see today is mostly of medieval origin. The Welsh name for the town is ‘Tref-y-Clawdd’, which means ‘town on the Dyke’, and Knighton is the only town to lie on the line of Offa’s Dyke, a large linear earthwork along the England and Wales border named after Offa, the Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia from AD 757 until 796, who is believed to have ordered its construction. As such, it is the spiritual home of Offa and the Offa’s Dyke National Trail.

Started my mtb life here, I don't t think there is another place in the country I like to ride. Highly recommended always quiet and hardly any traffic on the trials when I've been.

The whole of Hopton Wood is festooned with some of the best trails the county has to offer. Stiff climbs, screaming descents, technical riding galore, and smooth singletrack all blend into enormous fun. There are a variety of trails here to suit all palates.
