12月 11, 2025, Kilpeck Castle

There isn't much left of Kilpeck Castel, but there is enough to give you a sense of its situation and what it must have been like. It does offer fine views to the north, south and west, and would have dominated the village. Incidentally the photos of the carvings come from the nearby church, not the castle.

The needle spire of the church of St John the Baptist can be seen for miles around due to its position high on the hill on which King's Caple is situated.

A small chapel in an isolated spot at the top of the hill, next to the well named Church Farm, Little Birch.

Athelstan's Wood, once owned by the Bishops of Hereford and named after the 11th century Bishop Athelstan - it is now owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. There are a number of permissive paths through and round the wood which is mainly conifer plantation, but there are old deciduous trees as well.

This unusual and eyecatching church up on it's hill dominates the village of Hoarwithy, and it's most spectacular feature is the Italianate tower.

This is a particularly fine stretch of the river Wye, as recognized by the Wye Valley National Landscape. The stretched out village of Hoarwithy occupies the west bank, with its unusual Italianate St Catherine's church. The river is crossed by the old toll bridge with it's little Tollhouse - they stopped collecting tolls in the 1930's when the bridge was bought for public ownership.

A fine church high on it's hill that can be seen for miles across the valley. Just up the road is the Manor, again a fine building made of the local sandstone.

According to Harper Bridges - This bridge was commissioned by the congregations of the churches of Sellack Boat and King’s Caple and built in 1895. The towers are of tubular cast iron, with nameplate transoms embossed “Louis Harper AIMCE, Maker, Aberdeen”. The original cables to common anchorages are still in place, as are their hangers. However, at some stage (nobody seems to know when or why) further short cables were clamped to the original, presumably to support areas of wear and avoid cable replacement. This has led to crowding at the saddles. However, the bridge is still used and the local churches continue to hold their ‘Bridge Thanksgiving’ ceremony each year. This area is noted for its flooding but so far the bridge has held since the arched deck remains above the flow, although the approaches are inundated. It lacks the original longitudinal deck boarding but the original camber is well maintained. This bridge is the best illustration of the method of attachment of hangars to main cable employed by John and Louis Harper

This area has a few churches dedicated to welsh or Irish saints, as is the case here. Tyslio was the second son of the reigning King of Powys, Brochwel Ysgithrog, and the maternal nephew of the great Abbot Dunod of Bangor Iscoed. He took part in the affairs of Wales during the distressful period at the opening of the 7th century. Tysilio probably started his career in Trallwng Llywelyn (Welshpool) and afterwards took up residence in Meifod where he studied under Gwyddfarch. Around 630, Tysilio moved to an island in the Menai Strait, (now called Ynys Tysilio, where he established a hermitage, and preached throughout Ynys Môn for the next seven years. He then returned to Meifod, where he talked the aging abbot out of making a pilgrimage to Rome. Eventually, Tysilio succeeded Gwyddfarch as abbott. Also of note is the tall narrow spire, which is a feature of several churches in this area - such as Ross, Peterstow and Kings Caple. Many others in Herefordshire have square dumpy towers instead.

Lovely church yard with views and across the road is The Tump, a small hump with views around the hills.

12月 8, 2022, Higgins' Well

Hidden a quiet part of Little Birch village, the brickwork of Higgins' Well dates from the early 19th century. Some improvements were added later, including a large pool as an animal trough for use during Victoria's diamond jubilee. Higgins Well has long been an important and unfailing supply of water for the village. A local legend about the well, as told on http://www.visitoruk.com/Hereford/little-birch-C592-V11335.html runs as follows: "The original outlet for the waters of the well was in a meadow at the top of the steep bank which rises above the present well. The owner of this meadow became so annoyed at the trespasses of the villagers across his land to the well that he had it filled up. However, shortly afterwards, while smoking his pipe in the great chimney corner of his house, he was startled by a sudden eruption of water under his feet." "To his untutored mind, the waters forcing this new outlet were a sign that the guardian spirit protecting the local people's rights was asserting itself. To appease this spirit, but determined not to reopen the well, he moved down to the present site and started to dig. In due course water began to bubble up through the underlying rock and, miraculously, the inrush in the chimney corner disappeared. The water spirit was obviously satisfied that water was once again made available to the people. This "act of contrition" resulted in local immortality for Mr Higgins."

Designed in the Italian Romanesque style by architect John Pollard Seddon, St Catherine's is an astonishing Grade I-listed church in the small village of Hoarwithy. Described as the 'most impressive Victorian church in the country', it was completed in the late 19th century. Built from sandstone, its most prominent feature is its four-storey campanile.

Nestled in classic border country, Kilpeck is a pleasant Herefordshire village. Part of the Welsh Kingdom of Ergyng until the 9th century, it became part of Archenfield after the Norman conquest. In the 16th century it became part of England, though Welsh was still commonly spoken here until the 19th century. It is notable for two landmarks in particular: the remains of a motte-and-bailey caste and its small but remarkable Romanesque church of St Mary and St David's.

Wormelow is a village in Herefordshire with strong links to Arthurian legend. Also known as Wormelow Tump, the tump refers to a mound that was said to be the grave of King Arthur's son Amr. However, the tump was flattened to widen the main road in 1896. It is part of the parish of Much Dewchurch, a neighbouring village to the north west. Here is the Grade I-listed St David's Church, boasting a distinctive square tower.

Built in 1895 to link the parish churches of Sellack and Kings Caple, this is an impressive footbridge across the River Wye. Before the bridge was built, a ferry would take residents from bank to bank. However, it has been said that the boatmen could often be cantankerous and refuse passage. This caused one vicar to defiantly cross the Wye on stilts, or so the story goes...

The pretty village of Sellack sits on the River Wye, surrounded by gorgeous Herefordshire countryside. Its church is a beautiful building, with a towering 14th-century spire and 17th-century stained glass windows on its eastern side. Refreshment and great food can be found at the Loughpool, a traditional pub in a quaint, timbered cottage. After a day following the Wye's snaking course through the countryside, its rustic charm represents the perfect setting to unwind in.

A little hike up another English Marilyn that is quite a pretty walk with a trig pointed summit atop a wooded Iron Age Fort.
