During the 16th century, a highwayman by the name of Humphrey Kynaston lived in this cave. Far from being a down and out thief, Kynaston was the unruly and allegedly murderous son of the High Sheriff of Shropshire, Sir Roger Kynaston. He was outlawed after being found guilty of murder and abandoned his comfortable home to live in the cave. Supposedly, he went on to live as a highwayman in the manner of Robin Hood; robbing the rich and donating to the poor.

The Nesscliffe Hill Country Park includes the main hill as well as the common just to the north. The mixed woodland and heathland are both lovely places to ramble about and make thriving habitats for wildlife. Within the limits of the country park lies Kynaston Cave. From the summit of the main hill, extensive views across Shropshire and into Wales can be enjoyed. It's particularly spectacular on clear days.
