Matute is a small village of about 90 inhabitants located in the Najerilla river basin. Very close to here is the Salto del Agua, a beautiful waterfall located at the end of a path that crosses an impressive ravine.

The complex is made up of two independent monasteries. On the one hand, San Millán de Suso, the oldest, was founded by San Millán himself. On the other, San Millán de Yuso, created centuries later by his followers. Within its walls many legends have been formed throughout the centuries.

The Yalde Reservoir is located on the outskirts of Castroviejo. Built over the course of the Yalde River, a tributary of the Najerilla, the reservoir regulates river flow and supplies water to 11 municipalities located in the course.

Suso (from the Latin sursum) means "up", and is how this oldest monastery is known. Yuso (from the Latin deorsum) means “below” and is the other name by which the more modern Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla is known.
