The Monastery of San Salvador in Cornellana, Asturias, is an impressive Romanesque architectural complex dating back to the 11th century. It was founded in 1024 by Infanta Cristina Bermúdez, daughter of Bermudo II of León. This monastery has been an important religious and cultural centre throughout the centuries. The monastery is located in the town of Cornellana, in the municipality of Salas. In addition to its historical value, the monastery offers a beautiful natural setting, ideal for walks and explorations.

The path off the main path is worthwhile and the 250 meters you walk reward you with a small oasis of peace.

The Monastery of San Salvador de Cornellana is a place of great historical and spiritual relevance. It is located in the Asturian town of Cornellana, in the municipality of Salas, near the confluence of the Narcea and Nonaya rivers. It was founded in the year 1024 by Infanta Cristina, daughter of King Bermudo II and Queen Velasquita. The infanta retired to this convent after the death of her husband Ordoño.

The Iglesia de Santos Justo y Pastor is a stunning Romanesque church dating back to the 12th century. Despite undergoing renovations, its original charm remains intact. Featuring a stone portico, single nave, and rectangular presbytery, it offers visitors a glimpse into medieval architecture and serves as a vital stop for pilgrims, providing them with a stamp to mark their journey.

This newly restored monastery complex entitled “San SALVADOR” was not dedicated to one of the many people we venerate as blessed or saints and ask for their heavenly intercession with God. Rather, it is consecrated to the incarnate Son of God Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Savior.
