In 1879, the town was connected to the Mallorcan railway network via the Inca-Manacor railway line. In 1977, the 914 mm gauge railway service abruptly ended due to track defects. However, everything remained as it was when the railway service was discontinued. During the reconstruction to meter gauge in 2003, a bypass was built in Petra, and a new station was built outside the town. The old station remained and became home to local boules players. Since nothing has been changed, Petra is today the last remaining example of a typical Mallorcan rural railway station. The Parish Church of Sant Pere is considered one of the largest parish churches in Mallorca. The size and perfection of its construction testify to the importance of Petra in past times.
