References to Vilaür appear for the first time in 1017, as Vila Dur, in a bull from Pope Benedict VIII. Its origin is, as usual in so many other medieval towns, in a group of houses around a church that ended up inside a protective wall. In this case, the church of Sant Esteve was the initial germ of this small medieval town. Today it still preserves parts of that wall, integrated into the constructions that were expanding the town. Access to the main square of the town is through a portal covered with a barrel vault that crosses the lower part of one of the towers of the wall.
