Alcázar de San Juan is one of the most interesting destinations in the heart of La Mancha, with a blend of history, heritage, nature, and Cervantine traditions. Its name comes from the Military Order of Saint John, which dominated the area after the Reconquista. It claims to be the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, as the baptismal font where, according to some studies, the writer was baptized is preserved in the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor. It was an important railway junction and economic center in the 19th and 20th centuries, which shaped its urban development.

Beautiful surroundings with bird watching points and to enjoy nature

Due to the lack of rainfall in recent years, this lagoon, like many others, has dried up.

A lake that is empty most months of the year and that is only filled when it rains heavily. But the environment is worth it and the set of paths that are around it too.

Close to the Río Záncara we find this lookout house that lets us see the lagoons and the banks of the same river. A naturalized area where we find a large number of life and birds.

Supposed birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the author of Don Quixote. Although there is evidence that he was actually born in Alcalá de Henares, the Cervantine tradition is still alive in Alcázar. The most important points of interest are: the Church of Santa María, the Torreón del Gran Prior or the Church of San Francisco, the rest of the disappeared convent of San Francisco.

The Laguna del Camino de Villafranca and the other nearby lagoons are great bird watching areas with the possibility of seeing more than 200 species. For many, flamingos are the most spectacular. The trail that runs along the side is also good for mountain biking or even gravel biking. If you're going for a walk here, don't forget your binoculars and camera!
