Breathtaking views from the hiking trail. Fortunately, ropes are attached to the boundary posts, which many hikers gladly use. Whether going uphill or downhill, they simply provide a sense of security.

This viewpoint is also worth seeing for sunrise. However, the path from the parking lot at Rio Arieiro to the start of the Ninho da Manta trail was completely icy when we were there. It only became passable once the sun thawed the ice.

Another highlight along the route. However, immediately afterward, the path is blocked by an iron gate. The path has collapsed, and there was a forest fire. According to unconfirmed reports, it is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2026.

The Pico Ruivo mountain hut lies just below the summit and is the perfect spot for a break in the thin mountain air. Here you can take shelter, have something to eat, refill your water bottles, and gather your strength for the final ascent. It's ideal for enjoying the view of the surrounding ridges before continuing on to Madeira's highest point.

The Pico do Arreeio summit is GIANT in the morning and worth every effort. Unfortunately, the hike to Pico Ruivo is closed shortly after the start – without any warning! The signs say you can go (September 2025), but suddenly you find yourself in front of an iron gate! On the way back, you're charged €3 per person, without any warning... The beautiful view at the beginning was worth it, but the overall impression is strange...

Breathtaking scenery and great views, but it's also quite busy. It's best to check the trails beforehand, as one path is currently closed due to the risk of rockfalls. The trails are easily accessible, and to keep them that way, you should pay the fee at the gate, otherwise even more will be closed.

The Casa de Abrigo is accessible only on foot and is located at a central junction of several hiking trails: PR1.2 – Vereda do Pico Ruivo: A 2.8 km, moderately difficult trail from Achada do Teixeira to the hut. PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro: A challenging but scenic trail from Pico do Arieiro, 7 km long, to the hut. PR1.1 – Vereda da Ilha: An 8.2 km descent from the hut to the village of Ilha with a 1,376 m elevation gain. PR1.3 – Vereda da Encumeada: An 11.2 km trail to Encumeada, which is currently (May 2025) closed.
