A golden sand beach, stretching 3 miles to the confluence of the River Esk. The beach offers fantastic views over the North Sea and Scurdieness lighthouse, and the play around, pools and pitch and putt offer fun for all the family.

One of the bird hides in the Montrose basin, offering a great opportunity to look out for broad-array of species that are often found in the basin.

A statue built to honour the St. Bernard dog, "Bamse", a heroic mascot of the Norweigan forces in the Second World War. A Purpose built bird-watching hide built on an elevated structure. The hide offers uninterrupted views over the nature reserve, and provides excellent opportunities for spotting the diverse range of birds the reserve is home to.

The lighthouse on Scurdie Ness was opened in 1870 after the local population requested one following several wrecks. It was automated in 1987. The headland makes a great ride on its own or as part of a longer loop. The road out along the northern coast is access to the lighthouse only so you're unlikely to see many cars but you might spot seals, dolphins and whales.

Montrose has a massive sandy beach running north from the South Esk all the way to the North Esk river mouth and St Cyrus. It's a great place to run with the harder sand near the sea being easier but wetter or the soft sand and dunes inland staying dry but much harder underfoot. You can create a loop by heading inland and returning along the lanes or over the playing fields.

Lighthouse guarding entrance to Montrose harbour. Like all of its kind, it is now automatic but still retains atmosphere. A “Challenge Cairn” was erected here in May 2005 so it makes a good place for a finish photo. Short road walk (or bus from Ferryden) into Montrose.
