In Vechta, part of the historic citadel has been restored. Within the citadel lies the Vechta Museum with its "Museum in the Armory" and "Castrum Vechtense." In the old armory, history from the Bronze Age, the Middle Ages, the Thirty Years' War, and the building's more recent past as a prison until 1991 comes alive on three floors, all of which are accessible for people with disabilities. Numerous hands-on exhibits make a visit a unique experience. At Castrum Vechtense, a partial reconstruction of an 11th-century medieval castle, visitors of all ages can immerse themselves in everyday life during the Middle Ages.

The 18-meter-high tower is considered a symbol of Lohne's elevation to town status. It is located on a hill in Lohne's city forest. It was built in 1908 by the Beautification Association, the forerunner of today's local history association, as a visible sign of the new dignity. The tower is a listed building, was extensively renovated in 1996 and was repainted in 2013. When the visibility is good, you can enjoy views as far as Quakenbrück and Cloppenburg.
