12月 3, 2025, Puerto de Pedro Bernardo
The Pedro Bernardo Pass is one of the classic climbs in the Sierra de Gredos mountains, highly prized by cyclists and a regular feature of races like the Vuelta a España. First section: Up to the village (Pedro Bernardo), with gradients of 5-6%, a road in good condition, and spectacular views of the Tiétar Valley. Urban section: In the village, the gradient eases, even offering some flatter sections. Second section: After the village, the asphalt becomes rougher, and the toughest kilometer (7-8%) appears, followed by a "balcony" section with incredible views and a sustained 5% gradient to the summit.

It's a very quiet pass with hardly any traffic, especially in its final section. The eastern slope, which starts from Arenas De San Pedro, has two very distinct sections. The first, to the village of El Arenal, is very gentle and always runs under an extensive pine forest. When you reach El Arenal, in the village itself, the gradient increases, and then there are 6 km left with an average gradient of 7% and some 10% slopes. The views from the pass are beautiful and it exudes a spiritual tranquility. In summer, it's highly recommended to climb it early in the morning to take advantage of the cool morning air. The western slope connects with the climb to Puerto del Pico, and the climb begins in Ramacastañas. Although not as well-known as other passes in the Sierra de Gredos, I have to admit that I loved it. A beautiful port away from traffic, without steep slopes (it only becomes more difficult in the final section).

The Puerto del Pico with its viewing point is one of the classics of the Sierra de Gredos, used frequently in the routes of the Vuelta a España. The viewing point offers beautiful views of the Valle del Barranco or Valle de las Cinco Villas. You can also see the layout of the old Roman road that also went up this valley to access the upper part of the Iberian plateau. The road that goes up to the Puerto del Pico on its southern slope is in perfect condition as it is the national road N-502. It is a fast road so you have to be very careful with cars, especially on holidays and vacations.

The Puerto de Pedro Bernardo is the younger brother of the Puerto de Serranillos. Almost every time this port has been climbed in a professional race it is linked to the Puerto de Serranillos, only the second being considered a port. However, the Puerto de Pedro Bernardo is in itself a hill where you can go from the valley where the CL-501 road runs (where the town with the same name is located) to the valley of the Puerto de Pico, where Esteban del Valle and Mombeltrán are located. The chain with Serranillos is the most typical, as I said previously, although it is also worth chaining it with the Puerto de la Centenera or the Puerto del Pico. The road is rough, with hardly any shoulder and very little traffic. It is a very pleasant port to climb... as long as the heat is not suffocating.

This is one of the least known ports in the Sierra de Gredos, as the Vuelta a España has only climbed it once. It is a very pretty port, very typical of this area, as the slopes are moderate, the road is narrow and somewhat punished by the contrasts in temperatures, and there are many pine trees. Traffic is almost non-existent, especially after leaving behind the towns of El Arenal and El Hornillo.

It is one of the climbs that I enjoyed the most in the southern area of the Sierra de Gredos. We start from Candelada, a town that is worth visiting and where there are all kinds of services, including a bicycle shop and workshop, taking a very narrow road that takes us directly to the sanctuary. It is a climb in steps, with 3 hard areas and 2 rest sections, the first steeper than the second. When leaving Candeleda there is a small descent. When crossing a bridge, the climb begins with a hard ramp, and after 1 km, the hardest km of the climb arrives with an average of 9% and ramps above 10%. After overcoming it and leaving behind another kilometer that is gentler at 6%, there comes a rest, after which we tackle the second section of the climb, where we find the hardest ramp of the climb, with a maintained 13% area. After this point, a new break arrives, much shorter than the previous one. We thus approach the third section of the climb, the longest at approximately 4 km, with a hard ramp in the second km and the last two kilometers at 5%, to enjoy the landscape and views. The road is very narrow, with smooth but irregular asphalt, very typical of secondary roads in this area. Highly recommended!!

It is a beautiful town in the southern area of the Sierra de Gredos. It has a lot of charm due to its location above the mountain and its walled streets. There is a nice fountain where you can drink water to continue the route. The town next door, El Hornillo, is also pretty.

It is probably the most important town in the southern area of Gredos. Its center is very lively, with several bars and restaurants where you can eat well and enjoy the summer afternoons. There are also several historical places to visit. It is a place that can be used as a base camp for various routes through this area of the Sierra de Gredos, full of passes and peaks, many of which are the history of the Tour of Spain. In this area of Gredos, the pools are very famous, which are places in the river where you can bathe and cool off in summer. There are several around Arenas de San Pedro. As they tend to fill up on summer days, you have to go early to get a spot.

It is a very beautiful small town where it is worth having a drink to enjoy its historic center and its summer atmosphere. To do this, it is necessary to deviate from the main road and enter its rustic streets.
