The La Geria Nature Reserve is the largest wine-growing region in the Canary Islands. The severe volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736 deposited thick layers of lapilli (picón) here, ranging from 1 to 2.5 meters in thickness. Initially born out of necessity, a unique form of dryland farming developed. To access fertile soil, hollows were dug into the lapilli layer, and a single plant was placed at the bottom of each. The porous layer allows the precipitation, which falls almost exclusively in winter, to quickly seep into the soil penetrated by the vines. In addition to the hollows, semicircular walls made of lava rocks often protect the individually growing vines from the strong winds.
