The bronze statues depict four women pulling a large white rope, symbolizing the hauling of boats for docking. The sculptures commemorate the hard and often deadly work of these women, who were often alone or widowed with dependent children.

Bilbao City Hall stands on the site of the old San Agustín Monastery, which was destroyed during the First Carlist War. It was built in 1892 by the city architect Joaquín Rucoba, who also designed the Arriaga Theatre. It is built in the French Second Empire style and is known for its horizontal, elegant and rounded lines. The façade is decorated with sculptures by Fiat and the team consisting of Garamendi, Basterra and Larrea.

Via the Zubizuri in Bilbao, also called Puente del Campo Volantin, you literally walk from the old to the new city. Together with the Guggenheim Museum, the bridge is the figurehead of the more modern, renovated Bilbao. The Zubizuri was built between 1994 and 1997. In Basque, its name means ‘White Bridge’. The Spanish architect Calatrava developed the modern metal construction with a glass floor, which later turned out to be not very practical. As a result, the city of Bilbao had to spend more than a quarter of a million to cover the bridge with carpet.
