Nicknamed the Venice of the Gâtinais, Montargit invites you to stroll along its canals and discover its 17 bridges and its beautiful houses along the water.

The monastery was built from 1644 and has retained some of its buildings, integrated into more modern construction. It was used by the Hôtel-Dieu during the revolution and remained a hospital until 1993. A new facade was built from 1926 to 1932 in an eclectic style.

It was at Mantelot that the boats left the lateral canal of the Loire and crossed the river in a channel more than a kilometer long to join the rest of the canal on the right bank. This area therefore also served as a boat station.

Canal which connects Digoin to Briare, of a standard gauge called 'Freycinet', which was inaugurated in 1838. It contributes in particular to connecting the Loire to the Seine. Before the construction of the Briare aqueduct, it was at Chatillon-sur-Loire that it had to cross the Loire between two dikes, directly in its bed.
