"I only know that it was donated to the town and that it's been here for decades," replies the current manager of the Elephant Café when asked. "In addition to the elephant, he had created a crocodile and a giraffe. However, his wife got fed up and asked him to remove his creations from their garden. Around 1962, Mr. Maisse, owner of the Café de Liers in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, decided to buy the elephant," continues Jean-Pierre Lamotte. However, the café manager misjudged the size of the elephant he had just purchased. "Upon delivery, he realized it was impossible to get the artwork through the carriage entrance of his property. Mr. Maisse then decided to donate it to the municipality, which installed it opposite the café," explains the local history specialist.
