The Basilica of the Visitation (Basilique de la Visitation) is a striking basilica in Annecy, France, built in the early 20th century and completed in 1930. Situated on a hill overlooking the town and Lake Annecy, it is the chapel of the Visitation Monastery, founded by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Joan of Chantal, whose relics are preserved in gilded sarcophagi in the basilica. And a beautiful view of Annecy!

The patronage of this church, "Visitation of Mary (or, alternatively, Visitation of Mary)," refers to one of the many memorial or feast days in honor of the Mother of God. It is celebrated on different days, depending on the region or denomination, on May 31st or July 2nd. The term "Basilique de la Visitation," used here in French, describes the festival much more clearly. The old German term "Visitation"—which has negative connotations in our current expression and way of thinking—in the Bible simply refers to Mary's visit to her relative Elizabeth. Elizabeth was married to Zechariah, and the marriage remained childless, which was considered a social stigma at the time. However, despite her advanced age, she became pregnant, which the Archangel Gabriel told Mary when he brought her the message that she herself would give birth to the Son of God, Jesus. The son of Elizabeth and Zechariah becomes John, nicknamed “the Baptist,” who is considered the forerunner/paver of Jesus Christ.

Croix du Chugeut is the closest look out when hiking from Annecy. It is a great uphill hike to get to to it and the views are totally worth it. I really enjoyed the reveal as you emerge from the forest and step up to the view.

A must-see place if you are in Annecy. It connects the Esplanade du Pâquier to the Jardins de l'Europe. It seems that people kissing on the bridge would stay together for the rest of their lives.
