We're luckier today, August 15th. The bicycle and skeleton have made way for a list of consumption options.

Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention that dates back to pre-Christian times. Thanks to such a construction, human or animal muscle power could be easily replaced by a watercourse - natural or artificially created - in order to grind grain into corn, for example. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: Either the water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or the water is guided above the wheel and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

I hope a bit of advertising is allowed. There is a marvellous B&B / gîte - Haras de la Tour - just 2.5 km off all of these routes at Lamothe-Landerron. Many cyclists have stayed here. Have a look at http://www.harastour.com/ It is 5 km from the start point at Sainte-Bazeille. If you get lost I can come and cycle back with you.

If it were open, a nice place, right by the lock.

Very scenic, a few places to stop for refreshments. In the Gironde department, the surface is better than in the Lot-Garonne department. Sometimes nice and shady, many small locks.

The Garonne Lateral Canal is a navigable canal that connects Toulouse to Castets-en-Dorthe, France. 193 kilometers long, it follows the Garonne valley and connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the network of canals in southwestern France and is an important route for the river transport of goods. The Garonne side canal was built in the 19th century to meet the growing needs for transporting goods in the region. It made it possible to transport goods such as wine, wood and coal, as well as passengers. Today, the canal is mostly used for river tourism, with many cruises organized for visitors wishing to experience the beauty of the region from the water. Visitors can hire boats to navigate the canal or simply stroll along the towpaths, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The canal lateral to the Garonne is lined with picturesque towns and villages, historic castles and renowned vineyards. Visitors can also discover the local gastronomy in the many restaurants and inns located along the canal.

This mill is quite majestic, both for its appearance and its size. A true jewel of Entre-deux-Mers, it dates from the 11th century, even though it has been remodeled several times. A photo is required!

Unfortunately this nice buffet was closed. It didn't look like it would open again either. All opening hours were crossed out on the sign. But the rest area with a water pump next to it is good for a break.

A detour to the Écluse de Bassanne is worthwhile, as there is a nice buvette opposite. Since it is not always open, do your research before the tour so that you do not experience disappointment

Beautiful section of the "Véloroute des deux mers" on the Canal latéral à la Garonne ". This stretch is between the small houseboat in Fontet and Marcellus. The path is paved as far as Meilhan-sur-Garonne and can be driven wonderfully until Marcellus is the path Most of the time you drive in the shade of mighty trees and feel like you are in a green tunnel. There are also some open passages, in the hot season you notice the difference immediately. In Meilhan-sur-Garonne there is a nice restaurant right on the water of the Garonne and on the bike path, shortly afterwards there is a small café.

Beautiful section of the "Véloroute des deux mers" on the Canal latéral à la Garonne ". This stretch is between Castets-en-Dorthe and Meilhan-sur-Garonne. The path is mostly paved and is wonderful to drive. Most of the time you drive more powerfully in the shade of the trees Trees and feels like being in a green tunnel. There are also some open passages, in the hot season you can tell the difference immediately. A restaurant directly on Ecluse 53 in Castets-en-Dorthe and the "Ecluse 50" buvette near Bassanne invite you to take a break. In the further course of the cycle path, the rest stops are no longer directly on the cycle path

Beautiful and lovingly designed buvette located on the Canal latéral de Garonne. The opening times are not continuous. Unfortunately, I was unlucky on my bike tour along the canal, so I did some research on the internet beforehand. A quick stop is definitely worth it, as a look at the menu told me The decoration of the smoking, cycling skeleton is a nice warning to eat enough and stop off on bike rides, otherwise you will soon look like this.

This Canal is part of the route better known under the name of "Canal des deux Mers" which connects Bordeaux to Sète. In its oceanic part, from Bordeaux to the Seuil de Norouze after Toulouse, it takes the track "La Roger Lapébie" then the Canal Lateral à la Garonne. In its southern part, it becomes the "Canal du Midi" If you travel this route in its entirety, prefer a mountain bike or gravel bike to the road bike whose tires that are too thin will give you too much discomfort and are unsuitable for certain passages.
