It marks the former course of the city fortifications that separated the Outer Alster from the Inner Alster. The bridge was named after the Lombard pawnshop, which stood here in 1651 on part of Hamburg's ramparts, the "Bastion Didericus." The bridge, originally wooden and last replaced in 1827–1828 by a new structure designed by Wimmel, was replaced in 1865 by a stone structure designed by Johann Hermann Maack during the construction of the connecting railway from Hamburg to Altona. The 69-meter-long bridge spans the Alster between the Inner and Outer Alster with three arches. As early as 1902, it became necessary to widen it from 32 to 48 meters. Four cast-iron, four-armed candelabras with five glass spheres, designed by Carl Börner, adorn the bridge and form a characteristic Hamburg photographic motif. Rail traffic runs parallel to the four-lane road on four tracks, connecting Hamburg-Dammtor with Hamburg Central Station. Two tracks serve the Hamburg S-Bahn. To relieve the bridge, the parallel New Lombards Bridge was built in 1953, which has been called the Kennedy Bridge since 1963. In 2013, the Lombards Bridge was used by an average of 67,000 vehicles per weekday, 4 percent of which were heavy goods vehicles. A pedestrian walkway and tunnel run beneath both bridges. The walkway leads from Alsterufer Street to Neuer Jungfernstieg.

A beautiful cycle route along the dike with partial views of the Elbe River. Many sheep graze nearby, so ride with caution; they usually don't budge. There's a snack bar along the route, a children's playground, and access to the beach and the Elbe. The Elbe crossing is also visible from the shore. This tour is highly recommended.

Glückstadt is highly recommended for a short break. There are fantastic hiking and cycling opportunities here. The town itself is beautiful and offers many attractions. The harbor area boasts a lively nightlife scene with a great view of the waterfront.
