In late April and early May, the view of the Baltic Sea with its blooming rapeseed in the background is particularly impressive. These are the colors of Mecklenburg: the blue sea, the fresh green of the fields and meadows, and the bright yellow of the rapeseed. Added to that is the intoxicating scent.

In the north-east of the Wismar Bay lies the Salzhaff, scenically embedded in a chain of hills from the Ice Age. Together with the offshore Wustrow peninsula and an approximately one kilometer wide strip of mainland, it has been part of the "Coastal Landscape Wismar Bay" conservation area with a size of 2022 hectares since 1990.
