The original fortress was built in the 9th century and rebuilt on the same foundations in the 12th century. Further additions followed in the 17th century. The three round towers date back to the time of the Counts of Provence. Another unique feature is the troglodytic fortress, accessible from the Plateau de Cavillore.

The high-altitude village of Gourdon, also known as the "Eagle's Nest", sits spectacularly on the edge of a rocky cliff at almost 800 m altitude.
