National Necropolis

This military cemetery at the top of Côte 627 commemorates the fierce battles of 1915 between French and German troops in the Vosges. The necropolis was built between 1921 and 1923 and contains 2,346 graves, 1,382 of which are in ossuaries. At its heart is a monumental memorial – a “phare” or lighthouse – designed by Émile Bachelet, visible from the entire valley. The site was strategically crucial: on 22 June 1915, German troops took the heights, but on 8 and 9 July the French recaptured the terrain.

La Fontenelle (hill 627) forms a remarkable “balcony” overlooking the Rabodeau and Hure valleys. This strategic location, initially held by the French, was captured by the Germans on 22 June 1915. After a perfectly coordinated attack, the French recaptured the site on 8 and 9 July 1915 and held it until the end of the war. La Fontenelle was also the scene of a short mine warfare.

This section of the cycle path, which follows the Vélo Bruche route, unfolds in a very pleasant setting shaded by the trees. Whether in autumn or in the summer heat, the setting remains utterly authentic.

One of my favorite places in the Bruche Valley. Below the Champ du Feu, the vegetation fades to enhance the landscape. You can perfectly observe the Donon and the surrounding peaks in a hilly landscape, especially if you climb Mont Saint-Jean. The place is perfect for a picnic in summer. And for the most gourmet, the Perheux farmhouse inn is only a few meters away.

From this rock you have a view to the north. The way there is more of a trail. It is best to keep left before the viewing rock to avoid climbing. Attention: Nothing is secured here.
