6月 25, 2025, Église Saint-Géronce
This neo-Gothic church was built to replace the dilapidated church of the Recollect Fathers, a men's convent founded in 1627. In the 19th century, the church wanted to encourage a revival of Catholic worship; it encouraged the construction of new religious buildings in Gironde. Thus, in 1856, the Saint-Géronce church was consecrated. Due to lack of space, its apse was oriented towards the south, contrary to what the liturgy provided. The organ, which has its original construction from 1861, is remarkable. Mass is celebrated there every Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.

A ferry crosses the estuary between Blaye and Lamarque. Bicycles are of course welcome and the crossing costs the same as for a pedestrian (€4.50 in August 2024). Check the timetables on the department website: gironde.fr

The linguistic proximity of the "Pont Eiffel", which spans the Dordogne river here, and the low mountain range "Eifel" in the far west of Germany is no coincidence: The family of the designer - whose world-famous Tower of Paris (named after its builder) is probably known to everyone - has German roots. The ancestors of the Eiffel Tower builder Gustave EIFFEL come from the Eifel town of Marmagen (in the Euskirchen district, North Rhine-Westphalia). The village square there - if you are interested, see the following hiking highlight https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/1830307 - is named after him.

New site for timetables: https://ccb-blaye.com/economie-et-tourisme/tourisme/les-heures-du-bac-blaye-lamarque/ Very simple boarding for cyclists, just be on time at the ferry to board at the same time as pedestrians.

Worth seeing and impressive bridge, even with a cycle path. Nice view of the railway bridge too.

Church in town worth seeing. The market square with the hall is also worth seeing. Only the stupid one-way streets are annoying.

In his 56 years of service, Vauban, who was already an Ingénieur de France, designed 33 new forts, delivered over 400 projects for 160 sites and modernized countless existing forts. He is the actual creator of the enceinte de fer, the iron belt, and the pré carré, with which France under Louis XIV secured its external borders. The fortified town of Neuf-Brisach/Neu-Breisach is considered to be his main work Fortifications by Vauban is the name of the World Heritage site that summarizes the important fortifications of the brilliant French master builder. In 2008, UNESCO decided to include twelve particularly exemplary and well-preserved sites in the World Heritage List: * Arras Citadel * Citadel, ramparts and Fort Griffon in Besançon * Citadel of Blaye, Fort Paté on an island in the Gironde and the * Citadel of Cussac-Fort-Médoc * Briançon fortification system (walls, four forts, signal tower and bridge) * Tour dorée (golden tower) in Camaret-sur-Mer * Fortified Upper Town of Longwy * Fortified city of Mont-Dauphin * Mont-Louis, composed of citadel and fortified city * Fortified town of Neuf-Brisach * Saint-Martin-de-Ré fortress with ramparts, port and citadel * Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue: Towers and fortifications in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and on the neighboring island of Tatihou * Fort Liberia, city walls and the fortified cave Cova Bastera in Villefranche-de-Conflent” (Source: Wikipedia)

Here is Gustave Eiffel's road bridge which spans the Dordogne between the municipalities of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul and Cubzac-les-ponts, built from 1879 to 1883. Destroyed during the Second World War, it will be rebuilt in 1946 and 1947 by Jacques Eiffel, grandson of Gustave. In 2016 and 2017, rehabilitation works made it possible to create a cantilevered cycle bridge (source Wikipedia). This bridge, so long awaited, is practical, reliable, and makes the passage of cyclists and pedestrians completely safe.

The crossing on the Sébastien Vauban amphidrom lasts around 20 minutes (between 15 minutes and 35 minutes depending on the tide) for a distance of 4.5 kilometers. It allows you to avoid a two-hour detour. A ship ensures the crossing for 4 rotations per day in winter and 10 in summer. Boarding : For all modes of transport used (bike, car, etc.), the cost of the driver’s seat is not included. As of July 1, 2021, tonnage is limited to 3.5 tonnes on the Blaye-Lamarque crossing. Timetables on transgironde.fr - Real-time information by subscribing to the site gironde.fr/bacs - You will find up-to-date information there. On the one hand, the Pont Eiffel is history of technology and on the other hand, the view of the Dordogne is beautiful.

This road bridge, built by Gustave Eiffel between 1879 and 1883 has a length of 1,545 m, and a length of spans of 553 m. It is divided into 8 spans, including 6 of 72.80 m and 2 of 57.60 m, 33 m high. The Cubzac bridge is built, as a replacement, on the foundations of an old suspension bridge which had been swept away by a storm. Unlike the previous one, this one will be fixed with a straight metal beam. The number of piers and abutments is increased to 9, to support these beams. In imagining this bridge, Gustave Eiffel innovated again by combining launching processes from both sides and cantilevering for the central part. On part of the beam of the bridge already built by launching, we hang cantilevered, by bolting, the iron parts which follow it and, once they are riveted, we use them as new support points for bolting the following parts. By walking in this way step by step, one manages to mount the successive pieces completely in a vacuum on the span, until one has reached the neighboring support where, using jacks, one raises the bridge the amount it had lowered by bending. This bridge was destroyed during the Second World War and then rebuilt in 1946-1947 by Jacques Eiffel, the grandson of Gustave Eiffel. Its access ramp is supported by stone arches which, seen from below, are presented as giving it the appearance of a Gothic cathedral, whereas they are simple semicircular arches. It is accessible from the port all year round free of charge. The Cubzac bridge, wrongly called "Saint-André-de-Cubzac bridge", is indeed located in the municipality of Cubzac-les-Ponts and not in that of Saint-André-de-Cubzac, capital of the canton. . The rehabilitation works carried out in 2016-2017 provided an opportunity to build a cantilevered cycle bridge over all the structures. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pont_routier_de_Cubzac
