This bridge was the only one to allow the crossing of the Arve until the construction of the Pont Neuf in 1850. The first Pont Vieux was built at the time of the Romans and then rebuilt in the Middle Ages. The current bridge was built in 1674 and restored in 1833. Known since 1788 in its current form, the "old bridge" was the only crossing point over the Giffre until the arrival of the train in the 19th century. It was used by Napoleon III on September 1, 1860 to go to Chamonix, on the occasion of the festivities linked to the attachment of Savoy to France.
