The Relais Jacquaire de Cayac, on the road to Saint Jacques de Compostelle, is located in a park in the town of Gradignan, crossed by the Eau Bourde River. It consists of a 13th-century church, listed as a historical monument, and a priory, whose buildings have become centers of cultural life. The history of the priory is inextricably linked to that of the pilgrimage to Saint Jacques de Compostela. Initially (late 12th century - early 13th century), it was a hospice run by religious orders, which played a welcoming role. From the 14th to 17th centuries, the hospice was converted into a priory and welcomed pilgrims on their way to Compostela. Since the Revolution, the buildings, which were sold separately, have unfortunately been altered. The town of Gradignan has repurchased them and welcomes new pilgrims year-round for a night in a converted building. https://www.gironde-tourisme.fr/itineraires/le-prieure-de-cayac/

The history of the priory is inseparable from the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The discovery of the tomb of St. James in Galicia and the great piety of the population in the Middle Ages explain the popularity of this pilgrimage. Pilgrims can not be disturbed by the length and difficulty of the journey, the fear of meeting bandits, or the hostility of certain regions. Cayac is located on the Via Turonensis, the road that connects Paris via Tours, Bordeaux and Bayonne with Compostela. Built on an old Roman road, the ensemble consists of a church, a nearby hospital and a cemetery where religious were buried and pilgrims died of exhaustion or illness. On the other side of the street there is the accommodation of the brothers and outbuildings of the hospital (winery, stable, chicken coop, barn and flour mill). Probably between the two buildings there was a vault that allowed the reception of the pilgrims and also served the hospital, so that they could follow the religious ceremonies.
